About Backspace:

Backspace is an Internet-based writers' organization comprised of nearly 400 members in a dozen countries. Backspace is predicated on the idea of writers helping writers, which we accomplish by means of discussion forums, an online guest speaker program in which literary agents, editors, and best-selling authors regularly conduct question and answer sessions with the group, and an extensive home page area with how-to and advice articles from agents and other publishing professionals. Some of our past and scheduled guest speakers include authors Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child, Elizabeth George, Robert Crais, Neil Gaiman, David Morrell, and Barry Eisler, as well as top literary agents, editors, publicists, and books reviewers.

Approximately one-third of the membership is agented and/or published, ten members saw the release of their debut novels last year, and thus far in 2006, three members have sold their novels to major publishers. Several have been nominated for and have won prestigious awards, and one member is a New York Times best-selling author.

Backspace is endorsed by David Morrell and Gayle Lynds (co-presidents of the International Thriller Writers Association), authors Kay Hooper and Lee Child, literary agent and long-time author advocate Richard Curtis, Greg Hatfield (Writer's Digest Publications), as well as many individual agents, editors, authors, bloggers, and others associated with writing and publishing. In 2005, Writer's Digest Magazine named Backspace to its 101 Best Websites for Writers list as "one of our top vote-getters." www.bksp.org

Backspace is a resource that I wish had been around 20 years ago, when I began to fumble my way through the biz. Visitors will find tons of frank discussions about what the whole mess of activities that's collectively known as "book publishing" is really like.
