New York
New York is a city of amazing vitality that refuses to fit into the Procrustean bed of patterns and ideas. Describing New York is like describing an elephant while being blind: you have to sculpt an image out of many pieces. And it is not a fact that the puzzle will fold into the same picture that someone else put together a second before you. New York has many faces, and they are all real. Here they speak 800 dialects and pray to all the gods of the world. Too cinematic. You've seen all this somewhere. Perhaps at first you will compete with a flock of Japanese people in the art of taking selfies in Times Square and be surprised at the square, where instead of a bronze statue or a temple, as you are used to, there is a seven-story LED screen broadcasting stock quotes. As you do so, you'll gradually discover the city's subtle charm in unexplored museums, student baruchs in the East Village, trendy Williamsburg, gentrified bohemian neighborhoods, train parks, flea markets, lamp coffee shops, and street food vans.
No matter how many guides you read and no matter what you expect from New York, this city will discourage you. But if you can love him, nowhere else will you be so free as on these streets, where rivers of yellow taxis are chained to the banks of reinforced concrete that threaten to pierce the clouds.
Housing prices in New York skyrocket above skyscrapers, so choose between saving or downtown.
Yes, New York is not limited to Manhattan, but, most likely, most of your movements will be concentrated here. The most expensive rentals are in Soho and Tribeca, Midtown, Chelsea, Lower Manhattan, West Village and Battery Park. Take a closer look at hotels in Brooklyn, Queens or in the nearest cities of New Jersey and Newark - prices there are 2-3 times lower than in Manhattan.
If you don't want to go broke, you better find a host on Couchsurfing. Plus, Airbnb always comes to the rescue with a price tag of $ 35 for a private room in Manhattan. Checkay and other online rental services: HomeAway, FlipKey, VRBO. Don't be too lazy to look for housing on the legendary Craiglist bulletin board - through New York locales, you can find options at reasonable prices.
Chelsea International Hostel (251 W 20th St) is a backpacker's find in New York. Located in Historic Chelsea, within walking distance of Times Square, Broadway and the High Line, this hostel is one of the cheapest accommodation options in Midtown Manhattan. The price for a bed in a four-bed dormitory starts at $ 32. A hostel is like a hostel, but breakfast of bagels, cereals, fresh fruit, clean linen and a towel are already included in the price.
Jazz on the Park Youth Hostel (36 W 106th St). Spacious and clean hostel on the Upper West Side. One location is worth it: the hostel is a five-minute walk from Central Park. In the evenings, various cool activities such as film screenings and bar excursions are constantly organized here. Here you can go up to the roof, play billiards, lie on sofas and watch a movie on a giant TV screen. And all this for $ 35 for a bed in a dormitory room.
HI NYC Hostel (891 Amsterdam Ave) is housed in a luxurious historic red brick mansion. The hostel is one of the largest in North America, so the pulse of backpacker life is here. The location is excellent: five minutes away from Riverside Park, ten minutes away from Central Park, and one block away from Broadway and the Metro. If you want to hang out, you are here: free excursions, walks in pubs, own show programs, barbecue in the courtyard. It is clean and pleasant here, and the staff will take care of you as if you were a family. Pricing starts at $ 42 per bed.
Truck-a-Float Hotel (59-14 Beach Channel Dr, Arverne) is an unusual place to sleep in tiny cabins moored to the pier. Not the most run-of-the-mill lodging in the world is located on the shores of the Bay in Queens near JFK Airport. The beach is 20 minutes from the eco-friendly hotel, and the metro is 4 minutes away. The downside is noise, but it is an excellent location for observing planes taking off and landing. Waking up with a view of the bay in a double cabin costs $ 80 on weekdays and $ 120 on weekends.
The Jane (113 Jane St). The hotel's interior is an explosive mixture of all Wes Anderson films. The hotel is more than a hundred years old, and it is completely steeped in history: here, for example, the surviving passengers of the Titanic stayed in 1912, awaiting an investigation into the disaster. For $ 59, you not only get a double room in downtown Manhattan with a river view, but also a free bike for exploring the city.
Hotel 17 (225 E 17th St) - a hotel with ascetic rooms, papered with wallpaper in the style of the 50s. At your service: 24-hour reception, free wi-fi and the best value for money. In Manhattan, it’s hard to find an inexpensive overnight stay in a decent place, but here it’s real: a double room will cost $ 89. Cherry on the cake: it was in this hotel that Woody Allen filmed scenes of the movie "Murder Mystery in Manhattan."
Pod 39 (145 E 39th St). Stylish, trendy, youth hotel next to the Central Station. Double room will cost $ 80. There is a great bar on the roof.
Carlton Arms Hotel (160 E 25th St). The hotel is close to Madison Square. The ambiance of this hotel has been described as a mix of Fellini films, Tennessee Williams plays, Burroughs' novels and a soundtrack by Tom Waits. All rooms are different: they were designed by artists in exchange for free accommodation. Take a close look at the photos before booking and decide if you are ready for this artistic frenzy. In winter, living here is much cheaper: $ 80 for a double room with a shared bathroom.
